12 Essential Rules to Live More Like a Zen Monk

We have more possibilities available in each moment than we realize.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

I’m not a Zen monk, nor will I ever become one. However, I find great inspiration in the way they try to live their lives: the simplicity of their lives, the concentration and mindfulness of every activity, the calm and peace they find in their days.

You probably don’t want to become a Zen monk either, but you can live your life in a more Zen-like manner by following a few simple rules.

Time Away From Memphis

I made a trip to Tri-Cities, TN for my "day job" and figured while I am here, I will make the most of it. There was a mountain about an hour away that is known for its good hiking trails... Roan Mtn.

I decided to hike this beast, and a beast it was. Temperature gradients changes form 65 degrees on the bottom to below freezing at the highest point I went to ( 6,484 feet). It was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle, and just connect with nature. The rolling mist and howling wind were both foreboding and calming simultaneously. Images of my Cherokee ancestors running along similar paths danced in my head, and whenever I stopped to catch my breath the Cherokee Forest seemed to be alive with pulsating energy. Wavy lines and morphing of my visual field certainly made for interesting breaks. I'm still not sure if it was an optical illusion caused by the mist, the low light, the heat radiating from my layers of clothing, or a combination of all of them.

Rocks and icy paths welcomed me near the end of my climb up. The final destination was rather anti-climatic, consisting of a reconstructed weather shelter and ruins of an old fire watch tower from a century ago. But I was at peace with warming my toes back up in preparation for stumbling back down the mountain.

Not a bad break from Memphis. And nice to to do something physical outside of my CrossFit and Krav Maga.

Let the good weather and training continue!

Now that its getting warmer here in Memphis, its time to take it to the jogging paths and local parks. Don't forget that CrossFit is but one facet of your complete fitness. The city has many beautiful parks that can be enjoyed this time of year.

Go running at Shelby Farms.... Take your dog to Overton Park. DO something to stay active this spring. More importantly, try to enjoy it LOL
